Hotel WiFi Bridge

I’ve been travelling a lot in 2010 and one of the frustrations of paid hotel WiFi is that it’s tied to your MAC address and means that I usually only get online with my laptop; leaving the iPhone, iPad etc not connected. I now carry a Apple Airport Express and a cheap small Edimax EW-7416APN Access Point. For hotels that have an Ethernet cable, I plug this straight into the Airport Express and put the Airport in NAT/Router mode (create a network and share a single IP Address) and then DHCP my new network. I usually get a Double NAT warning from the Airport, however it works great. For hotels that are WiFi only, I plug the Edimax EW-7416APN into my laptop via the ethernet initially, log into the Edimax web configuration and associate with the hotel access point in AP Client Mode, I then plug the Edimax ethernet cable into the Airport Express.

I’ve now got my own private WiFi network on the Airport Express bridged to the hotel WiFi via the Edimax or direct via the hotel ethernet cable supporting up to 10 clients (client limitation of the Airport Express). Both the Edimax EW-7416APN and the Airport Express are 100-240v and have interchangeable mains plugs for EU, US, UK, AU. All in all a nice portable solution for getting all my WiFi gadgets online. Only one device needs to authenticate with the paid hotel WiFi via NAT, then all devices can use the connection.

Tech notes: The Airport Express is a critical component of this setup as it supports NAT/Router mode allowing the sharing of the single hotel IP address to my private network in a neat small multi-voltage package. You cannot not use a pair of Airport Expresses to create the bridge (as cool as this would be!) as the Airport Express does not support AP Client mode via the Ethernet connector – in AP client mode the Airport only shares attached printers and supports AirTunes, the ethernet port is disabled.

Tech for 2010 – “Mobile and Remote Access”

Mobile WiFi: While I have data plans for the iPhone and iPad, the E585 is such a neat gadget to keep handy in your bag, I couldn’t resist getting one of these. It creates a WiFi access point for up to 5 simultaneous devices and then connects for 3′s surprisingly fast HSDPA network. The inbuilt battery goes for hours and is great for going online with the laptop and sharing a connection with colleagues. Also extremely handy when my iPhone and iPad have poor or slow coverage on Vodafone – which is quite often!

SSL VPN: looking for a new SSL-VPN solution for secure remote access to my home network, the one I’m using currently is still fantastic, but turned commercial a couple of years ago and therefore hasn’t been updated for a while. Highly recommend LogMeIn for iPad as quick reliable remote desktop tool.

Tech for 2010 – “Backups”

Offsite: I’m up to 6TB of active storage at home and really needed to rethink my back up strategy. So I’ve recently added 2 x 1TB drives to my IcyDock MB-561S-4S that I rotate every few weeks for offsite backups of 1TB of the most critical data, in addtion to another 2TB of local backups at home. Works nicely thanks to SecondCopy and some SCP scripts to backup my Linux server. I’m also using Microsoft’s BitLocker for whole volume encryption of the offsite backups. If you don’t have more than three copies of your critical data you’re crazy!

Tech for 2010 – “Photography”

DSLR: I downgraded from the n0D line to the n00D line of Canon’s – a 20D to 550D. I’ve had so little use for my Digital SLR over the years I couldn’t justify the 50D, nor did I want it at this stage as the 550D has aguably better features – for my usage. I would like a 50mm prime for portraits and possibly a proper photography course if I can make the time.

Compact Digital: I’m still using a Panasonic LUMIX TZ7 which is great camera with superb HD movies and sound, as well as fantastic pictures – great for filming gigs and festivals. There’s a TZ10 now, but I’m not ready for an upgrade just yet. Highly recommend the Panasonic TZ10 over the similar Canon model if you are in this market, LUMIX are really edging ahead of Canon – having owned four Canon compacts before the Panasonic.

HD Video: I continue to be underwhelmed by my now much superceded Panasonic HDC-SD100 camcorder. Definitely a poor purchase decision, will not dip into this market again for a few years.

Tech for 2010 – “Paper Free”

Books, Magazines and Newspapers: I will now only buy books available in ePUB, MOBI or on Amazon Kindle – absolutely love being able to pick up and read my books on iPhone, iPad and Kindle – with last page read position synchronised on all devices (except when I’m on the Underground!). I’ll now only read magazines and newspapers available on the iPad, for example WIRED and GQ. I still carry both an iPad and Kindle though, the Kindle is far more convenient to pull out on a crowded train and does not have the glare problems you have with the iPad when outdoors.

Digital Archives: Absolutely loving Evernote – synchronised notes between Desktop, iPhone and iPad apps. Combined with using JotNot to snap and index handwritten notes and whiteboards using the iPhone – so cool to be able to text search for something you hand wrote on a whiteboard months ago. Also purchased a Fujitsu SnapScan S1300 Duplex Document Scanner and have been gradually PDF archiving and disposing of all my all paper records, statements, receipts etc (although not uploading these to Evernote – no point in sharing those outside my secure home network). Also have a CardScan on my desk at work for getting rid of business cards collected.

Read It Later: highly recommend Instapaper for quickly saving webpages for reading later on the iPhone, iPad or your desktop. Really nice reading UI.

Always On Hand: Dropbox is such a great service – I have documents, licences, tickets, guides, insurance policies, maps and all sorts of bits of information I may need to refer to synchronised across my desktop, notebooks, iPhone and iPad. Great when travelling ensuring useful information is just a few clicks away. GoodReader is also very handy for connecting to all your documentation sources (iDisk, Google Docs, Dropbox, FTP etc), and includes a browser which is handy for connecting to websites and downloading files and storing them in GoodReader. GoodReader Also integrates as a viewer for mail attachments etc.
